Stonethwaite - Deep into Borrowdale a side turning goes to the pretty hamlet of Stonethwaite, really just a couple of cottages, a farm and a campsite. Here the valley is dramatically split by the forbidding Eagle Crag. It looks like a place members would do well to shy away from, but one of the finest ascents in Lakeland bypasses the crags by a series of terraces and clambering up a gully. The 9 mile [black] circuit (with 2783ft of ascent) of the Greenup Gill and Stonethwaite valleys combines a superb ascent of both Eagle and Sergeant's Crags and visit the summits of High Raise (2500'), Ulscarfe (2370') and Great Crag (1501').
