Loweswater - The unspoilt village of Loweswater village is set in a panoramic landscape to the south east of Loweswater lake. The village pub, the sixteenth century Kirkstile Inn, is a characterful building which provides a selection of cask ales, some of which are brewed on the premises.

Suggested routes commence from either the top of Whinlatter Pass to Hopegill Head via Hobcarton End & Grisedale Pike [red route] (11.5 miles with 2957ft ascent) OR from the minibus at Loweswater Village to Hopegill Head via Whiteside  [black route] (11.5 miles with 3675ft ascent). After joining together on Hopegill Head, the now combined route visits Grasmoor, Crag Hill, Wandope & Whiteless Pike before descending to the minibus at Loweswater village via Rannerdale.

From Loweswater village, Mellbreak rises like some colossus, a great gable if ever there was one [pink route] (9 miles with 2902ft ascent). Fear not the climb - it is a steady pull despite the loose shards and lack of pitching. With the north top underfoot the hard work is largely done, but the scenic delights roll on and on. The route crosses the broad heather-clad saddle to reach the higher south summit, then descends to Buttermere village via Scale Force. If the suggested return via Rannerdale is rejected, this will save some 656ft of ascent from the suggested route.
