A glorious 12 mile black (with 3730ft of ascent) skyline circuit of the remote Kentmere valley is suggested. Climbing initially via the Garburn Pass, the route becomes special once the summit of Yoke (2309') is underfoot. Thereafter a succession of handsome fells - Ill Bell (2476'), Frostwick (2359') and Thornthwaite Crag (2569') - lead with the Roman Road to the summit of High Street. The route then switches south and east onto Mardale Ill Bell (2496') and descends the zig-zags from Nan Bield Pass. If the summits of Harter Fell (2539'), Kentmere Pike (2397') and Shipman Knotts (1926') are omitted, a return made from Nan Bield Pass to Kentmere will save 1 mile and 465 feet of ascent. However an early return does more justice to the scenic delights of the upper Kentmere valley, tracking down-dale and gaining new perspectives on the Ill Bell range and the green strath leading back to the village. The suggested alternative 7 mile red route (with of 1092ft of ascent) visits the grassy top of Hollow Moor, perhaps the finest viewpoint into the ring of steep fells which blocks the head of the valley followed by a lonely tract of moorland to Sawmill Cott. A return to Kentmere is made via a gentle walk past a reedy mere where the rugged setting of the village can be appreciated to the full.
