Descending the scree-choked upper reaches of Kirkstone Pass, the back-ground is dominated by classic proportions of a magnificent glacially-carved valley. Ullswater and her attendant guardians provide an obvious attraction for the numerous visitors. Hidden from casual view immediately beyond the squat expanse of Brother's Water, the old world settlement of Hartsop remains a relic of Lakeland's past heritage. Undisturbed by the passage of time and rough traffic the hamlet encapsulates all that is best in the district, providing a first class approach for a 11 mile (with 3375ft of ascent) walk of equal merit visiting the summits of Grey Crag (2286'), Thornthwaite Crag (2569), High Street (2718'), Rampsgill Head (2581'), The Knott (2423'), Rest Dodd (2278') & Angletarn Pikes (1857') before dropping down to the beautiful hamlet of Patterdale.
