There are more than 2,000 howes (hollows) on the North York Moors. Bronze Age man buried important people with personal belongings in these. On excavation of their remains, daggers, clothing and even canoes have been found in these ancient graves. The 10.7-mile RED walk (with 1250ft of ascent) starts from the wonderful village of Goathland which most people will recognise as the set of the ITV drama 'Heartbeat' and will include two of Goathland's more famous waterfall's - 'Thomason Foss' and 'Mallyan Spout'. Thomason Foss is the smaller of the two waterfalls but is set in a beautiful part of the countryside surrounded by the rolling hills and next to the North York Moors railways where steam trains are a common sight. Mallyan Spout is perhaps the more impressive of the two waterfalls, it is set in woodland valley with the waterfall falling above your head from a height.
