BarrowBurn [6th December] - there are some truly stunning walks in Northumberland but a visit to the 2031ft summit of Windy Gyle is by far the best. Apart from the Cheviot itself, it must be one of the best known summits in Northumberland but luckily its relative isolation seems to keep a lot of people away. A [black] 11 mile route with 2000ft of ascent is highly recommended with the option of 'bagging' a couple of extra Border summits by extending the walk to include the [red] route. Don’t forget that it will be dark by 15:30 so torches are an essential safety requirement.
